The results of the establishment of a modern judiciary would come to be seen in 2023, said MP Hisaan Husain (Thulhaadhoo), President of the Judicial Service Commission.
MP Husain made this statement during an appearance on the pro-government cable channel, RaajjeTV. She said that the government and the JSC were working according to a modernisation plan to “improve” the judiciary.
She pointed out that next year’s budget had allocated a large amount of funds towards improving the judiciary. The goal was to establish a modern judiciary, she said.
The biggest challenge was developing the criminal justice system, and the system’s over-reliance on Correctional Services and the Maldives Police Service. She said that “Corrections has 3 online systems. Only 15 cases can be processed even if they are at full capacity. It does not matter even if hearings are scheduled at court”, she said.
She said that the establishment of circuit courts and the appointing of magistrates to those circuit courts would accelerate cases in the islands. She also said that the Court Complex would be developed prior to 2023, which would lead to a modern judiciary that would meet citizens’ expectations.
