The Supreme Court bench would be deciding on whether the Former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s bail in the next hearing next Monday.
The Ex-President is seeking to overturn the Criminal Court's decision issued against him regarding the G.A Vodumula being leased and taking USD 1 million. He was found guilty of money laundering and subsequently given a jail sentence of 5 years and a fine of USD 5 million to be paid to MIRA in 5 months.
on last Monday’s hearing, the Chief judge presiding over the trial said after counter-arguments by both sides, the defendant would be given the chance to submit any new evidence to further appeal his case. He also said that the court is aiming to complete these proceedings on last Monday’s hearing and if the proceedings go as planned the court would decide on Yameen’s bail release on the hearing scheduled for next Monday.
While Yameen’s appeal case was going on in High Court, his lawyers for bail pending appeal but the court refused to give him bail citing that he was a convict.
The judge's bench that presided the trial includes, Chief Judge Mahaaz Ali Zaahir, Judge Dr. Azmiralda, and Judge Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim.
