Hate Crime Bill will be Passed as it is: Pres. Nasheed

Former President and incumbent Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has stated that the government’s hate crime bill will be passed as the government presented it.
Nasheed on Sunday spoke to the press for the first time since the attack. In response to a reporter’s query, he claimed that he announced he would no longer pursue political work with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in relation to the hate crime bill.
According to the former president, the bill is being debated and researched, and that it is going well.
“We believe that the bill will be passed as it is”, said President Nasheed. While he as stated as such, many have expressed their discontent as the initial draft of the bill will hinder the encouragement of good acts and the condemnation of wrongful acts.
Parliament members in strong support of passing the bill as it is were supporters of former President Nasheed. However, the parliament floor has sent the bill back to the committee.
