Nasheed Reveals Why He No Longer Can Support the Govt

Former President and incumbent Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has declared that Adhaalath Party has monopolized the decisions of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
A statement released from the office of Speaker Nasheed read that the public majority voted for Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) in the 2018 elections due to the party's love for independence, and its regulations. He claimed the party gained political progress with the help of its coalition partners.
Nasheed further stated that the coalition was revealed to be a violation of the country's representative democracy when coalition minority Adhaalath Party was presented the opportunity to monopolize President Solih's decisions.
He described a majority of Maldivian citizens as "progressive". Progressive is a Western term that comprises irreligious secular beliefs. Nasheed claimed that most Maldivians appreciate independence, freedom of expression, music, culture, economic fulfillment, and hold "moderate" religious views.
The statement also read that voters across the country supported progressive candidates, and did not vote for candidates with strict religious views, as they threaten to strip the public of its freedom and remove all that they love from society.
MDP leadership wants not only diplomacy and leniency, but also to maintain the party's regulations to allow for independence, equality, and economic wealth stated Nasheed.
Nasheed revealed the government discovered the reasoning behind the May 6 assassination attempt was extremists labeling others as un-Islamic. It is speculated that a death sentence is declared the guise of a fatwa due to the labelling. A fatwa is a ruling on a point of Islamic law given by a recognized authority.
He further stated that some extremists enact the fatwa and that Dr. Afrasheem, Rilwan, and Yameen Rasheed were killed in this way. The targets of such hate crimes are politicians, journalists, and regular citizens who exercise their right to free speech, said Nasheed.
The former President claimed that conservative parties voting against the government's bill criminalizing hate caused the government to withdraw its support for the bill.
He believes the government withdrew support in fear of those advocating for the bill being dubbed the label forbidden by the bill. Nasheed divulged it was difficult to support the government if the government does not support the bill or what the bill is to accomplish.
Nasheed reiterated that the reins of the democratic leadership must not be forfeited out of fear, to those in the margins or those among the coalition partners who have no power over voting. The statement maintained that the rules of democracy and the constitution dictate leaders must defend MDP'S basic beliefs.
