Maldives Airports Company (MACL) requested the government authorities and state offices from now on to send letters in English.
MACL sent a letter to government offices on 1st September 2021, requesting to send official letters in English. They also asked for an unofficial translation if a letter is sent in Dhivehi. MACL claimed that they made this request because the aviation industry is regulated by international organizations.
A former senior official of MACL who spoke to TMJ stated that the government has been sending letters to MACL in Dhivehi for a long time. He pointed out that even back then the aviation industry was regulated by international organizations. He also said that he suspects that a sudden need for letters in English is due to having foreign staff at high positions of the Airport.
After President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih took office, he hired a British citizen as the CEO of MACL. Senior positions of MACL are being given to foreigners since the appointment of Gordon Stewart as the CEO of MACL. In last month alone two senior posts of the Airport have been given to foreigners.
