A man has been seized near Maafushi for attempting to smuggle contraband into Maafushi Prison.
According to Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu, police and prison officers conducted an operation based on information of an attempt to smuggle contraband into the prison via speedboat on Sunday night. The confiscated items include 50 smartphones, 42 phones, 109 phone chargers, 77 USB cables, 65 headsets, 49 Dhiraagu sim cards, 12 Ooredoo sim cards, two packs of box cutter blades, ten miswak, and other items.
Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed tweeted that a joint operation conducted by police intelligence, Maafushi police, and Corrections officers, a man was arrested off the island’s shore while attempting to smuggle contraband into the prison. He added that the goods have been seized by police.
CP Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu has previously stated that prison operations will continue until the smuggling of contraband is halted. However, as the prisons do not have surrounding barriers, he claimed that they lack several necessary modern facilities. Numerous phones and drugs have been seized during previous operations.
