State expenditure for travel has reached MVR 68 million.
Figures published by the Ministry of Finance show that the government has spent MVR 68.8 million on state travel from January 1, 2021, to August 19, 2021. MVR 70.2 million was spent within the same duration last year.
Last year, the government used only MVR 141.3 million out of the allocated MVR 237.8 million due to COVID-19. This year, MVR 50 million was allocated for out-of-state travel.
Government officials have been making several trips. Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid is currently abroad, and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is on an official visit to the Thaa Atoll.
During President Solih's first year of presidency, MVR 16.4 million was spent on his expeditions alone. In a previous interview, he stated that he enjoyed traveling outside of the country.
