Pres. Nasheed's Supporters Call for Imran, Mariya to Resign

Members of former President Mohamed Nasheed's faction have stated that Defense Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi and Home Minister Imran Abdulla must be terminated to implement the recommendations of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (241 Committee) following the parliamentary inquiry into the security breach in relation to the May 6 assassination attempt on Parliament Speaker Nasheed.
The parliamentary inquiry report included several recommendations regarding the explosion that left the former president gravely injured as he made his way to his residence. The President's Office has revealed that 38 of the recommendations are already in implementation.
During a Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) National Majilis meeting on Wednesday night, the party's May 6 Committee called for the termination of Home Minister Imran and Defense Minister Mariya. Parliament representative for Thoddoo constituency Hassan Shiyan claimed the government is being set back, and that allowing the ministers to remain in their position is a hindrance to the implementation of the 241 Committee's recommendations.
"I believe that the Defense Minister and Home Minister will create obstructions preventing the recommendations from being fully implemented. I wish for the recommendations to be followed through, even if the ministers have to be removed from their positions", said MP Shiyan. He stressed that the recommendations cannot wait, and must be implemented before the 2023 presidential election.
Speaking at the meeting, Maafannu-Central MP Ibrahim Rasheed (Bonde) expressed concern as the government has not published details of how the recommendations are being put into effect. He stated that Home Minister Imran is a hindrance to enacting the recommendations. While Bonde has stated as such, MDP has been divided. MP Hassan Afeef has also shared his worries as it appears President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih now favors Adhaalath Party over MDP.
