Illegal for MNU to Suppress Thoughts of Students, Faculty: Dr. Jameel

Former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel has stated that it is unlawful for the Maldives National University (MNU) to suppress the thoughts of its students and faculty.
Dr. Jameel tweeted his opinion on the university’s new social media policies prohibiting faculty members from criticizing people in political positions.
The MNU Council on August 4 has passed the social media policies for university staff. The policies specify appropriate and prohibited content for staff to share on social media and other platforms.
Appropriate content has been identified as academic research and knowledge. Movements and content to share the staff’s knowledge in accordance with university policies are also allowed.
Prohibited content includes content that may create conflict and unrest or disrupt the nation’s peace. This also includes content that contradicts Islam.
The policies also ban sharing content attempting to create hate for political figures elected by the public, or a person appointed to a position by the president.
Information that may negatively affect MNU, confidential information of students or staff posted without the subject’s knowledge, content to create disruptions among staff, and content that compromises the discipline of staff are also prohibited.
Content that may negatively affect the work environment, hinder staff’s official work, and create difficulties in the provision of MNU’s services have been banned.
Speaking on the matter, Dr. Jameel claimed that the university is attempting to spread illegal thinking. He iterated that educational, legal, and community thinking must be shared in university.
He described the ban on criticizing those in political positions as MNU shackling the students’ and faculty’s thoughts, deeming it illegal.
