Vice President of opposition People’s National Congress (PNC) and parliament representative for Madduvvari constituency Adam Shareef Umar has stated that while the nation is celebrating its 56th Anniversary of Independence, the citizens of Maldives are in a state of panic.
Adam Shareef, the Minister of Defense during the tenure of former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom, claimed that while police data shows the people are in a state of panic, the reaction is worsened and warranted due to President Solih’s government’s failure to assure the citizens their safety.
“We are in a state of panic this Independence Day. The police and Prosecutor General’s joint press conference created alarm. There are concerns as the government has failed to assure the citizens’ safety and security”, said opposition member Adam Shareef.
It is worth noting that former President Nasheed has introduced a resolution to the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) National Majilis based upon the information shared by the police and PG. Nasheed claimed it is now time to allow police to arrest extremists, as according to global democracies and nations lost to extremism, failure to act in such situations led to their downfall.
