Approximately 20 youths on Friday gathered at Boduthakurufaanu Magu to protest against China.
The demonstrators described China as a loan shark, a land-grabber, and stated that Chinese influence must be stopped.
Most of the demonstrators are victims of drug abuse. Some of the youths informed TMJ that they had been paid to attend the protest.
Sources reported to TMJ that the youths were funded by supporters of former President Nasheed.
Prior to the protest, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had recently called President Xi Jinping of China to discuss ways to rekindle the relationship between the two nations.
