Maldives Customs, India Sign MoU

Maldives Customs Service and India have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to exchange pre-arrival cargo data.
The agreement was signed by Commissioner-General of Customs Abdulla Shareef on behalf of the Maldivian government, and Chairman of India’s Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs Ajit Kumar on behalf of the Indian government.
The High Commission of India in Maldives has shared some information regarding the agreement. A statement released by the Indian High Commission read that a system to exchange documents presented to customs during export will be established under the MoU.
The statement further claimed that the agreement will increase efficiency and facilitate faster clearance of imports.
According to the High Commission, the MoU will improve the cooperation of both sides in exchanging data, improve the operations of customs administrations, simplify trading, and further aid in the supply chain and collecting income.
While numerous agreements have been signed with India since President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih assumed Office, the Indian High Commission is playing a more active role in publicizing information regarding the agreements than the Maldivian government.
