Time for Citizens to Call for Justice: Dr. Jameel

Lawyer of former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom and former Vice President Dr. Jameel has stated that now is the time for citizens to stand up to save the judicial system and serve justice, due to the increasing influence on investigations into legal issues.
Dr. Jameel made his statement during a special program on Channel13 as President Yameen has now been detained for 600 days.
The former Vice President claimed there are no investigations to be conducted into President Yameen, and that truthfully, current court proceedings and investigation are invalid.
He claimed there is great influence over the investigation, and that the pressure on police has never been this grave to date. He also stated that police have become political, operating under the direction of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
He speculated that President Solih is so involved in President Yameen’s case to remove him from the political scene, as the former president had a successful presidential term, is aware of how the nation runs, and understands the wrongful steps being taken in the Maldivian political scene.
Dr. Jameel further stated that Maldives no longer has an independent prosecution entity, and the most appalling occurrence in the justice system was due to the Judicial Service Commission's (JSC) influence on President Yameen’s court case.
Dr. Jameel stated that in the criminal justice system, all matters must be lawful, from investigation to prosecution, and all stages in between. Therefore, considering all happenings, it is evident that all aspects of President Yameen’s investigation are against the law.
Highlighting that the investigation into President Yameen and obtaining the testimonies of Adeeb and Ziyath were triggered by a letter from President of the Anti-Corruption Commission Muavviz Rasheed, Dr. Jameel stated that anyone with basic knowledge of the legal system could see the case is being handled unlawfully.
A judge who had even a shred of love for justice would not have decided President Yameen’s case based upon the testimonies of Adeeb and Ziyath, said Dr. Jameel, claiming that the case would not have been allowed to conclude in that way.
