Partner of the ruling coalition Adhaalath Party has countered the statement released on Saturday by the Leader of Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) and incumbent Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.
In a statement released on Saturday night, Adhaalath Party claimed Nasheed is attempting to achieve selfish political goals, and that he is attempting to display Maldivians as extremists to the rest of the world.
According to the statement, Maldivians strive for justice and equality, stand against corruption, and work to uphold the values of Islam.
"Maldivians have upheld these principles for over 800 years and are determined to continue to be guided by these principles. The Adhaalath Party was formed on and continues to uphold these values", the statement read.
Additionally, the party recalled that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was elected as the public voted for the coalition ticket.
The statement released by former President Nasheed contained serious accusations against Adhaalath Party.
President of Adhaalath Party Imran Abdullah has previously described Nasheed as an adversary of Islam.
