Parliament representative for Thinadhoo-South constituency Abdulla Saneef has declared that the majority of Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) members are opposed to collaborating with the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
During a program on VTV, Saneef stated he does not believe MDP can work with PPM. He further stated that although former President and incumbent Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed insinuated forming a coalition with PPM, he does not believe Nasheed will work with PPM and its leader President Yameen.
"Even if President Nasheed tweeted it, I don't believe he will form a coalition with President Yameen", said Saneef. He claimed that Nasheed would act upon the wishes of the majority of MDP members, as he would not want a party without members.
Saneef also stated it was highly unlikely for MDP to be divided over the issue, as he believes that although there are disputes and differing opinions among members, all issues can be solved with consideration and patience.
MP MSaneef reiterated that President Solih and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed would not take any action to jeopardize the party, as dividing MDP will be advantageous to neither.
Despite Saneef's claims, Nasheed has officially stated that he is no longer politically aligned with President Solih, and is unable to remain by his side on political matters. Former President Nasheed claimed there were no personal issues between them, but he and President Solih have differing political views.
Nasheed has also stated that he would request the support of PPM and Leader of PPM former President Yameen if the party chose to adopt moderate religious views, declaring that MDP needed a new perspective.
