Party Regulations Dictate Pres. Solih Must Run for Second Term: Saneef

Parliament representative for Thinadhoo-South constituency Abdulla Saneef stated that according to the regulations of the ruling Maldives Democratic Party (MDP), President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih must have the opportunity to win a second term.
During the "Fashamaa" program on Avas News, Saneef stated that MDP must allow President Solih the chance to compete for a second term, as dictated by party rules. He further stated that the MDP National Majilis has decided that the highest position within the party will be held by the MDP member who holds the position of President of Maldives.
Saneef revealed the National Majilis made the decision while Dr. Didi and Alhan Fahmy were Party President and Vice President respectively. The party's decision also allows for an MDP member, upon completion of a five-year term of presidency, to receive the party ticket without having to hold primary elections.
Criticizing the way primaries are held within MDP, Saneef observed that the voters list used by MDP is different from the list used by the Elections Commission, as the list used within the party does not include those who have left the party.
MP Saneef also spoke on changing the system of government. He recalled his involvement in campaigning for a parliamentary system in 2007. However, stating that the system had not been strengthened since then, Saneef stated he believes the work to change the system would strengthen it.
While Saneef has made his claims, former President and incumbent Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has declared he will be the presidential candidate for MDP in the 2023 elections. Nasheed further claimed that he wishes to change the system of government before 2023, but if the changes are not established, he would still compete in the presidential elections.
