Parliament representative for Naifaru constituency and Vice President of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Ahmed Shiyam has condemned Hulhule' Island Hotel's (HIH) sudden termination of Maldivian employees.
Shiyam stated that suddenly terminating employment after holding workers on leave without pay for a year is devastating for their families.
MP Shiyam made his statement on Twitter, sharing a letter of termination received by an employee. Tourism Employees Association of Maldives (TEAM) also made some observations after Shiyam's tweet.
President of Team Mauroof Zakir claimed that HIH is inconsiderate towards Maldivian employees. He appealed to remove the clause allowing for mass termination in the Employment Act.
Numerous company and resort employees were forced to take leave without pay due to COVID-19. Many have also been suddenly terminated.
State-owned enterprise Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL) holds 60 percent of shares in HIH.
