Special Envoy Abbas Arrives in Maldives to Oversee Investigation into Attack on President Nasheed

Abbas Faiz, appointed as Special Envoy by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to oversee the investigation into the May 6 terror attack on former President and incumbent Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed, has arrived in Maldives.
Previously having worked with Amnesty International, Abbas Faiz is a British National with over 30 years of experience in monitoring the human rights situation in South Asia.
President Solih has permitted Special Envoy Faiz to monitor the investigation within boundaries set by Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem and is mandated as a consultant for the investigation until justice is served.
This is the first time Special Envoy Abbas Faiz has visited the Maldives after his appointment on May 19. Upon arrival, he was welcomed by Chief of Staff Ali Zahir at Velana International Airport.
Abbas Faiz has close relations with Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) officials and has criticized previous governments ruled by oppositional parties.
