COVID-19 Expenditure Reaches MVR 3.4 Billion

Government expenditure for COVID-19 has reached MVR 3.4 billion.
Weekly figures published by the Ministry of Finance show that until June 28, MVR 1,789.6 million (1.7 billion) was spent on health and community. MVR 1,743.4 million (1.4 billion) was spent to recover from economic losses due to COVID-19.
The majority of the MVR 1.7 billion for health was used by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Ministry of Health.
By June 28, NDMA used MVR 783.3 million, and the Health Ministry used MVR 559.9 million. Both parties consumed a total of MVR 1.3 billion.
To help households recover from financial losses, the government has allocated MVR 26 million to subsidize water bills, and MVR 146.7 million to subsidize electricity bills.
MVR 421 million was distributed amongst 22,945 citizens as income support allowance. Loans totaling MVR 362.3 million were handed out by SME Development Finance Corporation. Bank of Maldives distributed MVR 585.9 million and USD 8.0 million as loans to major businesses.
