Former President and incumbent Speaker of Parliament has called for the sudden arrest of numerous individuals.
Nasheed made the declaration on the application Clubhouse while speaking in a club created by Maldives Democratic Party (MDP).
He stated that he was witnessing dark days, and can sense the approach of suicide attacks in Maldives. The former president declared that without prompt action, the acts may begin sooner. He believes that arresting a great number of people will be an effective step.
Criticizing the justice system, former President Nasheed claimed that placing suspects of terrorism on hold periods of 5, 10, or 15 days and allowing them to roam free was unacceptable.
“We clearly see people involved in acts of terrorism pardoned easily. However, in my ward, in the wards of every member of parliament, and in the wards of all our friends, there are normal young people begging. Even I have been to jail several times. These people have no way of being set free”, said Nasheed.
He urged the public to think about such matters deeply and overcome the current situation. He reiterated that in the near future, before any suicide attacks begin, learning the technology behind the devices strapped onto these people, finding out who has access to it and monitoring those involved is crucial.
Much like the right to construct a bridge, the right to shelter, and education, the public deserves the right to safety and security. This is not the time for it to be a lesser priority for the government, said Nasheed.
“We have no choice but to arrest numerous individuals," said Nasheed.
Speaker Nasheed highlighted that the government had several matters that require swift action, including the sudden arrest of a large number of people. He stated he never expected to have to advocate for the apprehension of such people, but it was necessary to ensure the safety of the public.
Directed at President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Nasheed called for the apprehension of suspicious individuals without further delay.
“You need to take action for the safety of the nation”, said Nasheed, addressing the President in an emotional statement.
After the attack on President Nasheed that took place on May 6, his family has pointed fingers at state officials. The former president’s daughter, Mira, recognized carelessness on the part of President Solih to have contributed to the attack.
