Request to Transfer President Yaameen to House-Arrest for Ramadan

The Opposition has requested President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to release President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom; currently serving a five year sentence in prison for money-laundering; to house arrest for the duration of the fasting month of Ramadan.
The Opposition Coalition had requested this of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih during a meeting held between the Coalition leadership and the President. The President stated that he will see what can be done within the confines of the law.
This meeting took place as the coalition requested for one and that the Spokesperson for Progressive Coalition Heena Waleed stated that the opposition expressed their concerns regarding President Yameen’s remand. Until date, President Yaameen has been in jail for over 487 days.
Opposition coalition has been holding demonstrations protesting President Yaameen’s jail sentence. President Yaameen is currently serving a five year sentence for being found guilty for money-laundering and a trial is on-going for bribery.
President Yaameen’s legal team has stated that his sentencing had been politically-motivated.
