The government’s definition of “democracy” is to “drag Opposition leaders to the Police” so that they may be “charged with nonsense charges”, said the opposition PPM’s VP MP Ahmed Shiyam (Naifaru).
He mentioned this in a tweet in response to the first hearing at the Criminal Court regarding the case against the Opposition Coalition’s interim President Abdur Rahim Ali. Ali plead not guilty to the charges put forward by the State.
Shiyam wrote that all of the individuals who had taken on the responsibility of keeping the government accountable were being dragged to the Police and being charged with politically-motivated charges, and taken to Court at all hours of the day.
He also wrote that the only Opposition leader this country has has, being the former President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom, been kept prisoner by the government. He said that the government continued to appeal to democracy after having done all this.
