The former President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom has been summoned to the Maldives Police Service to be questioned about new accusations laid against him by the State, said his lawyer, Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed.
The former President is currently serving a 5-year prison sentence for money-laundering. The High Court upheld the Criminal Court’s verdict after it had been appealed.
Two other cases agains the former President are currently being tried by the Criminal Court. On top of the two, the former President has been summoned to be present on Tuesday for questioning regarding a third case, said Dr Jameel.
Even in the face of more charges, Yameen would stay strong, said Dr Jameel. The secret of his strength would be the knowledge of his own innocence, he said. He would not flee even if more charges were to come his way, he said.
The government had approached the former President several times to invite him to flee the country, according to members of his family and the opposition Coalition. He refused their offers every time.
The former President’s legal team have begun work on appealing the Criminal Court’s verdict at the Supreme Court.
