Imran Retakes AP Presidency With 15% Voter Turnout

Home Minister Imran Abdullah has been re-elected as the president of the Adhalath Party (AP) today.
Preliminary results published by the Adhalath Party shows that Imran Abdullah secured 921 votes while his opponent, Dr.Ahmed Zahir Ali got 167 votes.
According to AP, out of the 6866 eligible voters, 1088 voted in today's elections. Hence Imran won the election with a 15% voter turnout, which is a historic low for the party. It is unclear why only 1088 members voted in today's elections despite 4556 members registering to vote.
AP, which is a member of the ruling coalition used to enjoy massive support among religiously conservative Muslims. However, in recent years the party has lost ground mainly because the leaders of the party have compromised the fundamental values of the party.
It should be noted that Home Minister Imran Abdullah has been filling the position of party president for the last 4 years without an election. Once a fierce critic of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party, Imran is now often considered as the right-hand man of President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih.
