Man Confesses To Theft Of Perfume Bottles, Fined MVR 10,000

A man who plead guilty to the charge of shoplifting two perfume bottles from Red Wave on Maajeedhee Magu, Male has been sentenced to pay a fine of MVR 10,000 by the Criminal Court.

The man had confessed to the theft during his preliminary hearing, and he had maintained his guilty plea throughout the legal process.

He had been charged with the dishonest appropriation of property belonging to another, which carries a basic minimum sentence of 2 years and 12 days of incarceration. Given that the defendant had plead guilty throughout the legal process, his sentence had been lightened to 1 year and 24 days of incarceration.

The Court decided to suspend the prison sentence on the condition that the defendant pay a fine of MVR 10,800 within four months to the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority.
