In a shocking development, The Maldives Journal has uncovered that the newly appointed minister at the President's Office, Ibrahim Waheed (Ibure), has a criminal past. According to records obtained by the publication, Ibure has been convicted of theft on multiple occasions.
The first incident dates back to 1998 when Ibure stole a computer belonging to M. Neelofarge Ismail Haleem. The stolen computer was later found in Ibure's room, and he was sentenced to one year of banishment. However, he was released after just five months when he was pardoned, and his sentence was acquitted.
Unfortunately, Ibure did not learn from his past mistakes and was found guilty of theft once again in 2001. This time, he had stolen a laptop belonging to German national Sophie Mullens. As a result, he was sentenced to four years and two months of banishment.
It is troubling to note that the current government in the Maldives has a large number of people with criminal records and convictions. Even President Ibrahim himself has been convicted in a case related to the sale of alcohol.
Despite his past, Ibure was appointed as a minister at the President's Office after the removal of MDP vice-president Ibrahim Shifaz. Ibure was the head of the committee set up to hold the party's primary elections held in January. However, Nasheed's faction has accused Ibure of playing a role in "stealing" the election.
