Indian news sources have reported that the Indian-produced COVID-19 vaccine will be shipped to the Maldives tomorrow.
According to Indian news outlets, the vaccine shipment will land in Velana International Airport at 1400 hours tomorrow. The Maldivian government has not announced anything about this as of yet.
The CoviShield vaccine was developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca, and although declared “safe and effective” ; with a 90% protection against getting ill; in a study published in The Lancet, the vaccine has not yet been approved for global use by the World Health Organization.
The Serum Institute had begun work to mass-produce the Oxford vaccine back in May 2020. They had produced 40 million doses of the vaccine before the results of the phase 3 trials of the Oxford vaccine were published.
