The interim president of the opposition Progressive Congress Coalition, Abdul Raheem Abdullah, has said that the incarcerated former president; Yameen Abdul Gayyoom; claimed that he would not submit to the government even if he were to be left in prison for the rest of his life.
Speaking at an opposition rally, Abdul Raheem Abdullah said that as the local council elections draw near, the government has begun to harass the opposition by accusing party officials and activists of different crimes and having them interrogated by the Police.
The opposition would not react to such threats and harassment, he said, for they had been trained and nurtured by the former president.
“What did he say today?” said Abdul Raheem, “He said that he would not submit to the government, nor would he kneel before them.”
He said that the former president would rather stay in prison for life rather than acquiesce to something that would threaten the nation’s sovereignty.
President Yameen is currently serving a 5 year prison sentence, having been found guilty of money laundering. Since then, the State has made two additional charges against him.
While former president has spent over a year in prison, the government has offered him several deals which he declined.
