Vice President of the opposition People's Progressive Party (PPM) and member of parliament Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon has stated that the power to change the system of governance remains with the people.
Ghassan stated this in a tweet responding to an article in Sun online which alleged that former President Mohamed Nasheed stated that he was unhappy that former President Yameen was imprisoned to win the support of President Yameen’s supporters to change the system of governance.
Ghassan noted that the Presidential system written in the constitution as the system of governance in the Maldives was written in the constitution because the people chose the system. When the constitution was being amended a referendum was held to decide the system of governance. MDP supported the parliamentary system during this vote. However, the majority of the people chose the presidential system.
Therefore, Ghassan noted that the power to change what the citizens decided remains with the citizens and that the people won’t sway to the whims of politicians.
