STO introduces GE HealthCare’s portable Vscan ultrasound system in Maldives

State Trading Organisation (STO) has introduced GE HealthCare’s Vscan portable ultrasound system to the Maldivian market as part of its efforts to expand access to modern diagnostic services across the country.
The device was officially launched by STO Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Shimad Ibrahim and GE HealthCare South Asia Sales Head Jagdish Babu during a ceremony held at Hotel Jen on Wednesday.
According to STO’s healthcare team, the pocket-sized ultrasound system allows healthcare professionals to conduct scans beyond conventional consultation and imaging rooms, bringing diagnostic services closer to patients.
STO said the portability of the device presents a significant opportunity to expand ultrasound services to smaller islands, where access to specialised diagnostic equipment may be limited.
Equipped with advanced technology, the Vscan models can connect to Apple and Android smartphones as well as laptops. Images captured using the device can also be shared with relevant healthcare professionals and institutions using the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standard.
GE HealthCare’s medical imaging equipment is already widely used by hospitals and radiologists across the Maldives, while STO serves as the brand’s authorised distributor in the country.
To support the equipment after installation, STO said its biomedical team has trained and deployed engineers specialising in different GE HealthCare imaging modalities. The team includes certified engineers trained to work with MRI, CT, mammography and ultrasound systems.
STO also highlighted the presence of local female engineers within its biomedical team as an important achievement in strengthening the country’s technical capacity in the healthcare sector.
The company said the introduction of the Vscan forms part of its continuing efforts to improve healthcare services in the Maldives and provide the public with access to innovative medical technologies.
