Five judges appointed by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to the Civil Court and Criminal Court have taken their oaths of office at a special ceremony held at the Supreme Court.
The oath was administered by High Court Judge Justice Fathimath Farheeza on behalf of Chief Justice Abdul Ghanee Mohamed. Following the oath-taking, the newly appointed judges signed their declarations of oath.
JSC President and Maandhoo constituency Member of Parliament Husnee Mubaarik delivered remarks to the newly appointed judges at the ceremony.
The JSC appointed two judges to the Civil Court and three judges to the Criminal Court. The appointments include two additional judges to the Civil Court and two additional judges to the Criminal Court, according to the information provided by the commission.
- Civil Court appointments
The two judges appointed to the Civil Court are Mohamed Nishath, of Reelmanzil, Kanduhulhudhoo, Gaafu Alif Atoll, and Aasiya Azeema, of Rose Villa, Hulhudhoo, Raa Atoll.
Nishath holds a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and a Master of Laws from the Maldives National University. He has served in the legal field for more than 15 years and has held positions including Deputy State Attorney at the Attorney General’s Office, Senior Legal Officer at the Anti-Corruption Commission, and General Counsel and Secretary General of the Maldives Bar Council.
Since October 30, 2025, Nishath has served as Chief Magistrate of the Gaafu Alif Kanduhulhudhoo Magistrate Court.
Aasiya Azeema holds a Bachelor of Sharia and Law (Honours) from the Maldives National University and a Master of Laws from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom.
She previously served as a Legal Officer in the People’s Majlis and as Deputy Director of Legal Affairs. Her service in these positions ran from August 27, 2014, to February 28, 2021.
- Criminal Court appointments
The three judges appointed to the Criminal Court are Sulaiman Mohamed, of Nooranimaage, Kurendhoo, Lhaviyani Atoll; Ahmed Thawfeeq, of Daisy Maage, Dhidhdhoo, Haa Alif Atoll; and Mohamed Abdullah, of Dream, Veymandhoo, Thaa Atoll.
Sulaiman Mohamed holds a Bachelor of Sharia and Law with Honours from the College of Islamic Studies. He has more than 12 years of experience in the legal field and has served as Chief Magistrate of the Hinnavaru Magistrate Court and, since September 4, 2022, as Chief Magistrate of the Kurendhoo Magistrate Court.
Ahmed Thawfeeq holds a Bachelor of Laws from the Maldives College of Higher Education and a Master of Comparative Law from the International Islamic University Malaysia.
With more than 18 years of experience in the legal field, Thawfeeq has served as an Assistant State Attorney at the Attorney General’s Office and as a Senior Public Prosecutor at the Prosecutor General’s Office.
Mohamed Abdullah holds a Bachelor of Arts and an LL.B. (Honours) from Karnataka State Law University in India. He has more than eight years of experience in the legal field and has served as a Senior Public Prosecutor at the Prosecutor General’s Office since September 2017.
