MTCC begins redevelopment of key market-to-harbour road in Malé

Redevelopment of the road connecting the Malé local market area to the North Harbour officially begins today, marking the start of Segment Two of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu Project led by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
The 250-metre stretch has been prepared for construction and will be upgraded into a four-lane road. MTCC aims to complete the work ahead of Ramadan, given the high public use of the area and its persistent traffic bottlenecks.
Speaking at a meeting with Henveiru residents on Sunday night, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said road congestion remains one of the Malé region’s biggest challenges after housing. He noted that the market area—one of the city’s most crowded zones—will be redesigned, and the upgraded road will function as a two-way street. It currently operates on a one-way system.
The start of Segment Two follows the completion and opening of Segment One on Monday evening. When all segments are finished, a total of 1,088 metres of Boduthakurufaanu Magu will have been redeveloped under the project.
