President Muizzu Cancels Dhonfan Land Reclamation Project Following Public Concerns

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that his Administration will not proceed with the planned land reclamation project in Dhonfan, South Maalhosmadulu Atoll, following a shift in public opinion.

The President made the statement on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, emphasizing that his government will only undertake initiatives that align with the aspirations and needs of the people. He noted that while the agreement for the Dhonfan project was initially signed in response to citizen requests, the project will now be halted in light of changing community sentiment.

President Muizzu reaffirmed his commitment to implementing development projects across the Maldives in close consultation with island communities, ensuring that local perspectives are respected at every stage. He also confirmed that the relevant authorities will formally notify the Dhonfan Island Council of the government’s decision today.
