The Maldives has urged the international community to take additional measures to alleviate the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, Palestine. The call was made during the 'High-Level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution' held at the United Nations headquarters.
Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the UN, delivered the country’s statement, emphasising the need for diplomacy and multilateral efforts to end Israel’s inhumane actions and genocide in Palestine.
Dr. Ali Naseer reaffirmed Palestine’s right to exist as an independent state within the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, and stressed the importance of sustained support through the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
He also expressed the Maldives’ readiness to contribute to the Arab Reconstruction Plan. The three-day conference, co-chaired by the foreign ministers of France and Saudi Arabia, resumed on July 28 after being suspended in June due to escalating conflicts.
Mandated by a UN General Assembly resolution from December 2024, the conference aims to promote the implementation of UN resolutions on Palestine and the Two-State Solution. This diplomatic effort underscores the global commitment to resolving the ongoing crisis through peaceful and cooperative means.
