Maldives and Sri Lanka have signed two key agreements to strengthen cooperation in diplomacy and criminal justice during Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s official visit to the Maldives. The agreements were signed at a special ceremony held at the President’s Office in Malé.
The two agreements are:
- An agreement on providing legal assistance in criminal investigations and prosecutions, along with joint training and cooperation in the diplomatic field.
- An agreement between the Foreign Service Institute of Maldives and Sri Lanka’s Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute focusing on foreign relations and diplomatic training programs.
The agreements were signed by Maldivian Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullah Khaleel and Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath.
President Dissanayake’s visit, which began on July 28, is his first state visit to the Maldives since assuming office in September 2024. He is visiting the Maldives at the invitation of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
This year also marks a historic milestone as the Maldives and Sri Lanka celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations, established on July 26, 1965.
