The Zakat Fund has distributed wealth zakat to 2,852 registered poor individuals this year, providing MVR 5,000 per person, according to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs. This represents a MVR 1,000 increase from last year, when each recipient received MVR 4,000.
Wealth zakat is distributed once annually to individuals registered with the Ministry’s poverty registry. Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed emphasized that the assistance brings meaningful relief to many families and acknowledged the continued generosity and cooperation of zakat payers nationwide.
The Ministry reiterated that the nisab, or threshold for zakat eligibility, is determined based on the price of silver. Currently, the nisab is set at MVR 9,264. Under Islamic law, those whose wealth exceeds the nisab for one lunar year are obligated to pay 2.5% (1/40th) of that wealth in zakat.
The annual distribution of wealth zakat plays a vital role in social support and upholding one of the key pillars of Islam through structured charitable giving.
