MVR85 Million Collected As Zakat-Al-Mal, Largest Collection So Far

Islamic Minister Dr Ahmed Zahir has announced that MVR85 million has been collected as zakat-al-mal.

In a tweet he had posted, he announced that MVR85 million had been collected from the entirety of the Maldives this year. He stated that this was the largest amount of zakat that had been collected so far. In his tweet, Dr Zahir prayed that God bless the wealth of all who had paid the zakat.

The Islamic Ministry had increased the nisab (i.e. minimum threshold for accumulated wealth to be eligible for zakat-al-mal), at MVR6,961.50. The nisab had been reduced since then to MVR6,878.20.

The Maldives calculates its nisab with regards to the price of silver, as published by the Maldives Monetary Authority. The current price of silver is MVR11.70 per gram of silver.
