The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has addressed recent confusion surrounding picnic rules in Hulhumalé’s public spaces, confirming that permits are only required when individuals bring furniture or large setups to areas like Central Park and the beach. The clarification came in response to circulating social media rumors that suggested all picnicking in Central Park without prior permission was banned and required a permit obtained three days in advance.
Hassan Shaheed, HDC’s Head of Marketing and Public Relations, spoke to the media to dispel these misconceptions. He explained that under existing guidelines for public space usage, casual picnics—such as those with blankets and personal items—do not necessitate prior approval. “Permits are only mandatory if individuals bring items like tables, chairs, or decorative backdrops,” Shaheed stated, emphasizing that the policy aims to balance public enjoyment with orderly management of these areas.
Shaheed further noted that HDC staff have been diligently maintaining the cleanliness of Hulhumalé’s public spaces. Additionally, employees have been tasked with engaging directly with visitors to offer guidance and information on proper usage, ensuring compliance and enhancing the community experience.
The HDC’s statement seeks to reassure residents and visitors following the inaccurate online claims. By distinguishing between casual picnics and those requiring permits due to additional setups, the corporation aims to foster clarity and encourage responsible use of Hulhumalé’s popular recreational zones, including Central Park and the beachfront.
