President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has allocated 325.5 hectares from Haa Alifu Kelaa Island’s lagoon for the development of two resorts, fulfilling a key pledge of his administration.
This decision was formalized through amendments announced under Presidential Decree No. 07/2025, issued on Saturday. The amendments were made under the Decentralization Act (Act No. 07/2010), section 56-1, subsection (a), which grants the President the authority to designate areas for both City and Island Councils.
Following these changes, an updated chart of Kelaa Island has been officially codified and published in the Government Gazette.
The allocation of land for tourism development aligns with the Government’s broader strategy to expand the industry, boost local economies, and generate employment opportunities in the northernmost atolls of the Maldives.
