President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the crucial role of women in education, healthcare, governance, business, and economic development, emphasizing that no nation can thrive without their contributions.
In a special address marking International Women’s Day, President Muizzu highlighted the government’s commitment to expanding opportunities for women, strengthening their role in governance, and empowering them to achieve financial independence. He noted that Maldivian women have always been pillars of society, playing diligent and devoted roles throughout history.
The President emphasized that women constitute the majority of service providers in essential sectors such as education and healthcare, while also celebrating the achievements of Maldivian female athletes. Quoting the phrase “Educate a woman, and you educate a generation,” he noted that Maldivian girls outnumber boys in secondary, higher secondary, and university education, with most top-performing students being female—a promising sign for the nation’s future.
Speaking on women’s rights in Islam, President Muizzu stated that Islam has played the most significant role in elevating women’s status, dignity, and honour. He referenced Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) teachings, which place mothers and wives at the center of kindness and respect, and honored the Mothers of the Believers in recognition of International Women’s Day.
The President concluded by reaffirming his administration’s commitment to gender equality and ensuring that women have equal opportunities in all sectors of society.
