Maldives and Estonia Forge Partnership for Climate and Energy Sustainability

The Maldives and Estonia have reaffirmed their shared commitment to combating climate challenges and advancing energy sustainability through enhanced collaboration. This was highlighted during a meeting between President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and Estonia’s Minister of Climate, Yoko Alender, at the Joint Building of Ministries in Estonia.
President Dr. Muizzu emphasized the Maldives’ dedication to becoming an environmentally friendly nation. He highlighted the potential of adopting sustainable energy solutions and noted Estonia’s expertise in renewable energy, smart grids, and innovative technologies as valuable assets for enhancing the Maldives’ environmental resilience.
Minister Yoko Alender acknowledged the common challenges faced by small nations, including climate change and energy sustainability. She underlined the importance of scalable and cost-effective digital solutions and reaffirmed Estonia’s commitment to supporting Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in achieving climate and sustainability goals.
The leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation in renewable energy, digital innovation, and environmental resilience. Both expressed optimism about the potential for impactful collaboration in addressing shared priorities.
To formalize their partnership, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, Maldives’ Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Minister Yoko Alender. The MoU focuses on knowledge exchange and support in climate change, environmental protection, and energy innovation, paving the way for strategic collaboration between the two nations.
