Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen has announced plans to propose the establishment of an independent Aircraft Accident Investigation Body in the Maldives, aiming to enhance air transport safety and security.
During an interview on state media channel PSM, Minister Ameen highlighted the necessity of strengthening safety standards in a country that operates various types of aircraft, including seaplanes, and manages a high volume of domestic and international flights.
Recognizing the importance of adhering to international safety protocols, the Minister emphasized the need for an independent institution dedicated to aircraft accident investigations, separate from the existing Civil Aviation Authority.
“Creating an independent body for aircraft accident investigations is essential and aligns with international practices. This separation ensures impartiality and adherence to global standards,” said Minister Ameen.
The Minister outlined the legal framework required to establish such a body, explaining that its creation would necessitate a presidential decree. He stated his intention to submit the proposal to the Cabinet this month, with a decision expected before its conclusion.
As a first step, Minister Ameen proposed establishing an Aircraft Investigations Committee, Bureau, or a dedicated entity under the name Maldivian Accident Investigations. He expressed confidence that the new institution would bolster the safety and security of air transport in the Maldives by conducting thorough investigations aligned with international standards.
The move underscores the government's commitment to improving aviation safety infrastructure in the Maldives, ensuring compliance with global best practices.
