The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has announced the completion of a large-scale water drainage operation in Malé, following severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall. The operation, which commenced at 11:37 AM yesterday, concluded at 8:30 AM today, successfully removing 30,569 tons of water from the capital city.
To address the flooding, pumps were strategically placed in multiple locations, including West Park, IGMH, Salman Mosque, Boduvalu, Maafannu Ferry Terminal, Children's Park, and the Dhivehirajje ge Adu area. These efforts were part of a coordinated response to mitigate the impact of the heavy rain.
The downpour, which persisted from yesterday afternoon into late last night, led to flooding across the city, prompting 774 reports of assistance needs. Temporary shelter and food provisions were made for 226 individuals from 36 affected households.
The adverse weather has also caused varying degrees of damage on several islands across the Maldives, highlighting the widespread impact of this severe rainfall.
