The National Meteorological Service (Met) has issued a white alert for a significant portion of the Maldives, forecasting heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions. Initially, the alert was in effect from 6:30 AM to 11:30 AM today. Due to ongoing weather developments, the white alert has now been extended to cover areas from Baa Atoll to Addu Atoll, and will remain in effect from 11:30 AM to 5:30 PM today.
The Met Office has warned that these atolls are likely to experience heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunder, during the extended alert period. Wind speeds could also reach up to 24 miles per hour in some areas, especially within the cloud bands.
The adverse weather is being caused by a vortex located southeast of Sri Lanka and a related low-pressure trough. The Met Office is urging residents and visitors to exercise caution, as very rainy conditions are expected to persist throughout the New Year holiday. The weather is forecast to improve by Sunday, following the weekend holiday.
The Met Office continues to advise the public to stay informed of any further updates and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during these severe weather conditions.
