The National Meteorological Service has forecasted rough seas, heavy rainfall, and the possibility of tidal waves across the Maldives during the New Year holiday. This adverse weather is expected to persist from January 1st to January 5th due to a low-pressure trough connected to a wind convergence zone formed in the southwest of Sri Lanka.
According to the Met Office, most parts of the country will experience heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder and strong winds. Wind speeds are expected to range between 15 and 25 miles per hour, with gusts reaching up to 50 miles per hour during squalls. The northern and central atolls will see winds from the north and northeast, while winds in the southern atolls will blow from the west and northwest. These conditions will result in generally rough seas, posing potential risks for marine travel.
Additionally, some islands may experience tidal waves as a result of these deteriorating weather conditions.
Given the heightened risks, the Met Office has urged all individuals, particularly those traveling by sea, to stay informed of the latest weather updates and take necessary precautions.
This period of challenging weather coincides with a time of increased travel, as many people journey to various islands to celebrate the New Year holiday. Travelers are advised to plan their journeys carefully and prioritize safety.
