Customs Investigates Unauthorized Goods Release from Residential Bonded Warehouse

Maldives Customs Service has launched an investigation into the unauthorized release of goods from a bonded warehouse located in a residential property, without prior knowledge or approval from authorities.
Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, shared on X that the incident has amplified longstanding concerns about bonded warehouses being operated in residential properties. These spaces, often dual-locked with keys managed by customs officials, are considered unsuitable for ensuring the security and control necessary for such operations.
The implicated warehouse, housed in a residential property, was reportedly no longer being used for its intended purpose. Customs records confirm goods were stored within the warehouse, and the owner will be held accountable for the items, including payment of applicable duties.
Customs and police are working together to uncover the circumstances surrounding the unauthorized release and to take necessary legal actions.
Minister Ihusaan emphasized that residential properties pose risks to the integrity of bonded warehouses. The Government has introduced reforms to ensure such facilities are now operated in dedicated, controlled areas under complete customs oversight.
This investigation underscores the critical need for enhanced security and regulatory measures in managing bonded warehouses.
