Maldivian, the national flag carrier of the Maldives, is set to expand its wide-body aircraft operations to Europe after successfully launching direct flights to three major cities in China next year. The airline will begin flying from Velana International Airport (VIA) to Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu, using the newly acquired wide-body Airbus A330-200 aircraft.
The first of these wide-body aircraft is expected to arrive on 7 January 2025, marking a significant milestone in Maldivian’s growth strategy. According to Maldivian Deputy Managing Director, Ali Saleem, the airline is currently making the necessary preparations to launch these wide-body operations, which will significantly boost the airline’s capacity.
Saleem highlighted that these operations are expected to carry 60,000 passengers annually to the Maldives, providing a substantial financial boost for the airline. With China being a top source market for Maldives tourism, the new flights to Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu will operate three times a week, accommodating passengers in economy, business, and premier classes.
Maldivian’s Chief Strategist, Mohamed Saffah, emphasized that while the initial focus will be on China, the airline plans to extend its wide-body operations to Europe following the launch in China. This expansion is anticipated to play a crucial role in furthering the airline's growth and increasing its international reach.
