China has become the leading source market for tourists to the Maldives, surpassing all other countries with a remarkable 38.8% growth compared to last year.
The latest Tourism Update Report from the Ministry of Tourism reveals that 259,723 tourists from China have visited the Maldives so far this year, compared to 187,118 in 2023. This growth has catapulted China to the top position among countries contributing to Maldives tourism. Last year, China ranked third in overall arrivals and 27th by year-end.
Other significant contributors to the Maldives' tourism boom include Russia, Germany, and Italy, which have also shown notable growth in tourist arrivals:
- Russia: 214,720 tourists (+2.6%)
- Germany: 149,998 tourists (+11.0%)
- Italy: 131,295 tourists (+10.8%)
In total, 1.9 million tourists have arrived in the Maldives this year, marking an 8.8% increase from the 1.7 million tourists recorded during the same period last year.
The government aims to reach 2 million tourists by year-end. With an average daily arrival of 6,091 tourists, this target is on track to be achieved by the end of December, requiring just 52,721 more arrivals to hit the milestone.
