The National Disaster Management Council, chaired by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, has approved the Maldives Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy 2024-2030. This milestone decision, made during a meeting at the President's Office, underscores the nation’s commitment to minimising risks from natural and man-made disasters, including those related to climate change.
The strategy focuses on reducing vulnerabilities in infrastructure, housing, and the natural environment while fostering community resilience. It aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, specifically addressing the principle of "Building Back Better" to enhance recovery efforts and future disaster preparedness.
According to the President’s Office, the strategy will bolster the Maldives' global advocacy against climate change, with a specific emphasis on the challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS). It also aims to build human capacity in disaster management and integrates key elements from the Paris Agreement through the National Adaptation Plan.
With this endorsement, the Maldives solidifies its role as a global leader in disaster risk reduction and climate resilience, setting a benchmark for other nations in the region.
