State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has officially launched its Research Foundation, aimed at advancing the Maldives' research and innovation sectors. The inauguration ceremony was held on Wednesday at the STELCO Head Office in Malé, with the company’s Managing Director, Hussain Fahmy, presiding over the event.
The STELCO Research Foundation seeks to elevate the country’s capabilities in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) by integrating modern research practices and technology.
In his address, Fahmy emphasized STELCO’s commitment to contributing to the nation’s progress through research and innovation. Highlighting the company’s pool of educated and skilled employees, he remarked, “This foundation should not be limited to a ceremonial launch. The country should benefit from it through meaningful thought and reflection—not at a simple level, but in a significant way.”
As part of the launch, STELCO unveiled the Research Foundation's website and announced its first project: the Unmanned Submersible Vehicle (USV) initiative. The USV project involves deploying underwater drones to explore inaccessible areas, collect data, and support environmental protection efforts.
This initiative underscores STELCO’s ambition to foster advancements that benefit the Maldives, both in technological innovation and environmental conservation.
